Following the Way

Following the Way of the Lord

Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos,  a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus.  He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures.  He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately,

Acts 18:25,26

However, I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a follower of the Way,

Paul the Apostle Acts 24:14

The earliest Christians referred to themselves as followers of the Way. The term ‘Christian’ was intended to be a term of derision when the people of Antioch coined it, but the meaning of the word, ‘little Christs’, was appealing to the followers of this new faith.

While the religions up to that date had a clear separation between the worshipper and the god in question, Christians believe themselves to have been ‘born again’ to become ‘new creations’ as a result of the ‘seed of God’ being implanted in them. This makes them true sons and daughters of Jehovah Himself, sharing His nature and power as real family members. While religion is man’s efforts to reach God, Christianity is God’s effort at adopting a family.

The hundreds of rules and laws were replaced by four. Dozens of rituals were replaced by two. Each believer becomes a priest.  Each believer begins as an infant in God’s household and is an heir of the Kingdom of God. Just as any prince must do, the child is given to tutors and trainers but mostly attention of the Father Himself to learn the discipline and duties necessary to correctly use the power and authority God’s prince is heir to.

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.1Peter 2:2,3

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.1Peter 2:10-12

since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, Romans 1:19,20

The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Romans 8:19-24

So what of this Way we are to follow? The Way is not just a path to be guided on, it is a pattern of thinking, an adopted set of values, a state of being, a new set of relationships, and an approved procedure to live life from the Fathers’ prospective. We have creation, the angels, the Bible, the Holy Spirit, the Father, and others to give us assistance to follow the Way, but we have One who isthe way and the truth and the life. John 14:6’ . Jesus set aside all His divine power and authority to enter the Human race as a man and show us how to follow this Way from Birth to everlasting Life.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:4-7

When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”  “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:42-52

Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, Luke3:23

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! Phillipians 2:5-8

The Way is a set of life principles that will lead us to healthy, vigorous growth into the maturity of Christ. The Way is the working out of the adoption by the Father; the atoning and cleansing by the Blood of Christ; and the instruction and empowering of the Holy Spirit by walking in fellowship with God. The writers of the Bible have given us an astonishing collection of insights and tools to give us spiritual power, a healthful mental hygiene, and increasing physical control.

This is in way of introduction to a series of short teachings in video and written form to point out some of the practical ways a Christian can live a cleaner more fulfilled life.
